Reports
To request a copy of a police report or an accident report, you should contact the Records Unit to determine that the report is available before you come to pick up a copy. For an accident report, please call 616-738-4024 or for a criminal report please call 616-738-4023 or 616-738-4026. There is a charge for obtaining a copy of these reports. The cost is $4.00 for the original report and $1.00 per page for any additional pages.
Acquiring Gun Permits and Licenses
The Records Unit is responsible for processing all applications for Carrying Concealed Weapons permits, permit to purchase handguns, and the registration of all handguns for the township residents of Ottawa County.
If you would like to apply for a permit to purchase a handgun and you are a township resident, you should report to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office located at the County of Ottawa Fillmore Street Complex in West Olive during the listed times. You will need your Michigan Driver's License or a Michigan State ID, with your current address to apply. If you have already purchased your handgun and need to have it registered, you should report to the Ottawa County Sheirff's Office located at the County of Ottawa Fillmore Street Complex in West Olive with the handgun in a box or case UNLOADED and with the purchase permit you were issued to purchase the handgun. This must be done within ten days of the purchase. We will verify the make, model, and serial number of the handgun and issue a Michigan Handgun Registration for your firearm. There is a $5 cash fee for services applied to gun permits and licenses.
This fee is waived for CCW holders. CCW holders are required to bring a Pistol Sales Record upon registration of their handgun. These can be obtained from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or from the www.michigan.gov website. (Type in 'Pistol Sales Record' or 'RI-60' in the advanced search box)
These should be filled out in triplicate. The original is mailed to the Firearms Records Unit, copy each to seller and buyer.
Gun Permits and Registrations
Gun permits and registrations include all persons who come to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in West Olive for the purpose of obtaining a purchase permit or registering a handgun. (With the exception of those who have not qualified for the purchase permit). Registrations and permits are handled on a walk in basis at the Ottawa County Sheirff's Office. They traditionally take between five and fifteen minutes per permit/weapon, depending on how quickly the clearances come back from the state and Federal systems.
Carrying Concealed Weapon Permits
The process for obtaining a concealed weapons permit starts by obtaining an informational packet from any police department or any of the three Ottawa County Clerk's Offices. Read over the materials carefully to make sure you have completed the necessary paperwork.
Step 1: The following items are required at the County Clerk's Office:
- Valid picture ID with current address (Michigan Driver's License or Michigan ID Card)
- Course completion certificate (If 1st Time Applicant)
- For CCW renewals - review gun laws and complete one-hour target practice
- Two (2) passport photos - You may obtain these at Wal-Mart, Meijer's or Walgreens
- Be prepared to provide two (2) phone numbers
- Complete application. DO NOT sign and date your "Concealed Pistol License Application" until you present your application to a representative of (and at) the County Clerk's Office.
- Application Fee ($105.00) made payable to: OTTAWA COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE Accepted forms of payment are cash, check, credit card (Visa/MasterCard), money order or cashier's check.

- Valid Picture ID with current address (Michigan Driver's License or Michigan ID Card)
- Receipt from the County Clerk's Office
- CCW License (if renewing)
Once the requirements and fee has been met, the clerk assigned to CCW permits will then start a very thorough background check. After the background check is completed the CCW packet goes to the Gun Board for approval. This entire process can take one month or more to complete.
There are a number of restrictions and rules for those being approved to carry a concealed weapon. A gun safety course must be completed and renewal of this permit is every five years. Fingerprinting
If you need to be fingerprinted for licensing or employment purposes, you may report to the Sheriff's Office Administration Building at the County of Ottawa Fillmore Street Complex in West Olive. You must have your Michigan Driver's License or a Michigan Identification Card with your current address on it. You must be a resident of Ottawa County. There is a $10 fee per card for this service. Additional state and Federal fees may apply.
Hours for fingerprinting are 8:00am until 4:30pm Monday through Friday, except holidays.
