Bioswale/Infiltration Swale

One of the low-impact features being used in this project is a green infrastructure item called infiltration swales, or bioswales. These will be constructed along the length of the project as shown on the map.

A swale is a low tract of land that is designed with different types of soils to slow and capture stormwater runoff by spreading it horizontally across the landscape.  The soils help filter the stormwater.

Seeding the Swales
To help the bioswales filter the rainwater, the swales will be seeded with a native grass mix.
The bioswales will be seeded with turf-type tall fescue grass to provide an aesthetically pleasing area and to allow them to be easily maintained and to minimize long-term operation and maintenance.  This grass will have a deeper, less dense root structure and will be drought tolerant.

During a rain event, the stormwater is captured by the bioswales and slowly filtered into the perforated plastic (HDPE) pipe laid beneath the native soils. They will help relieve flooding by slowing the amount of water entering the system. Because of this, the project was able to be designed with smaller pipe sizes, leading to cost savings of thousands of dollars.

For this project, the bioswales will be constructed by excavating out the native soils alongside the roadways, laying the perforated HDPE pipe, then filling the swales back in with native soil.

Each bioswale will be constructed to capture and store water up to a depth of 6 inches.  Once water within the bioswale exceeds that depth, catch basins within each area will route the extra water directly into the stormwater sewer system.
