Monthly Food Distribution Scheduled for Next Week
Ottawa County Community Action Agency operates the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) through a grant from the Michigan Department of Education. The program is designed to supplement the nutritional intake of seniors age 60 and over and WIC denied or terminated Mothers, Infants, and Children (MIC) under the age of six. Commodity food boxes will be distributed throughout Ottawa County next week December 11 – December 14 and include items in five major food groups – meat, dairy, vegetable, fruit and grains.
“The CSFP program provides healthy foods to eligible families, stretching food dollars needed for other necessities such as prescriptions and medical care.” Says Mary Grillo, coordinator for the CSFP program in Ottawa County. CSFP food packages provide good sources of protein, calcium and vitamins typically lacking in the diets of seniors.
Distribution sites are as follows: In the Holland area, Tuesday, Community Action House South; in Jenison, Tuesday, Georgetown Senior Center; in Grand Haven, Thursday, Grand Haven Salvation Army; and in Coopersville, Thursday, Coopersville VFW (Post 5598). Residents of specific housing complexes may also be eligible for food distribution and delivery of home meals. For additional information on distribution services, dates and locations contact Community Action Agency at (800) 764-4111 ext.5619 or visit www.miottawa.org/caa online.
In order to receive the CSFP box individuals must meet the appropriate eligibility requirements. Seniors must be 60 or over; show proof of income for one month and be a resident of Ottawa County. WIC denied or terminated Mothers, Infants, and Children must show proof of the child/children(s) age, proof of income for one month, be a resident of Ottawa County and show proof of denial or termination from WIC.
It is the mission of the Ottawa County Community Action Agency to reduce the effects of poverty in Ottawa County by promoting self-sufficiency and economic independence. Auxiliary aids available upon request to individuals with disabilities. An equal opportunity employer / program.
