Maintenance drugs are defined as long-term drugs that
are prescribed for chronic illnesses, such as a heart ailment.
Short-term drugs are defined as drugs that are prescribed
for a limited amount of time to treat a temporary ailment.
Lifestyle drugs are non-essential drugs that treat ailments
like baldness, dry skin, wrinkles, erectile dysfunction, incontinence and
hot flashes.
If you are considering enrollment for one of the above programs, consider that you may be eligible for Children’s Special Health Care.
The Ottawa County Health Department recommends that call your preferred pharmacy to ask about their individual details. Coverage and cost of specific drugs may vary from pharmacy to pharmacy and is subject to change.

Medicare Prescription Drug Insurance, called Medicare Part D
- On January 1, 2006, people with Medicare have a new opportunity to purchase prescription drugs insurance to cover some prescription costs. (Traditionally, Medicare did not pay for prescriptions unless they were given as part of a hospital stay or by a doctor.)
- Medicare Part D is very complicated and is being marketed to people on Medicare by the insurance companies which offer it. There are 18 companies that offer a total of 40 separate plans in Michigan to choose from; each of the 40 separate plans differs from the other 39 in significant ways.
- It is very important that all people who have Medicare review the benefits, options and features relating to the Medicare Prescription Drug coverage and make an informed decision concerning enrolling in a plan.
- In addition, insurance companies are now advertising a different kind of Medicare health plan called Medicare Advantage.
- Human Services Agencies strongly urge you to discuss your options with a trained counselor, rather than picking a plan on your own.
- Before you begin checking on options with a counselor, make a complete list of your current drugs and dosages.
