Project Update
The M-45 project involves replacing the storm sewer along the south side of the roadway. The project became necessary after a sinkhole developed at a manhole structure adjacent to the roadway. Work completed in April provided temporary stabilization to secure the area and reduce the risk of further roadway damage.
The project is currently anticipated to be completed in November. The storm sewer is located approximately 35 feet below the ground surface, creating additional engineering and construction challenges. Throughout the summer, the project team has been evaluating repair options and developing feasible alternatives for MDOT to replace the existing storm sewer system.
Due to the depth of the storm sewer and its proximity to two large gas mains, the project requires a substantial shoring and earth-retention system. These measures are critical to protecting the existing utilities and ensuring the safety of construction workers and the traveling public.
A significant amount of engineering, coordination, and planning is underway to ensure the storm sewer can be replaced safely, effectively, and with minimal impact to the roadway and surrounding infrastructure.
