Real Estate Transfer Evaluation Program

Buying or selling a home? Ottawa County helps protect both buyers and sellers through our Real Estate Transfer Evaluation Program. Since 1984, the Ottawa County Environmental Health Code has required sellers to evaluate the condition of private well and septic systems before transferring property ownership.

We provide the evaluation report to buyers at closing, disclosing the condition of these systems and any needed corrections. This gives buyers the information they need to make informed decisions, while protecting sellers and agents from future liability. Well and septic systems that are properly maintained and operated keep our communities healthy and property values strong.

Water Sample Requests

Need to test your well water? Ottawa County’s water sampling service allows you to request testing of your private well’s drinking water to identify potential contaminants like bacteria, nitrates, or other harmful substances.

We provide laboratory results within several days, giving you clear information about your water quality and any recommended corrective actions. Regular water testing helps ensure safe drinking water for your family while identifying issues before they become health hazards.

Environmental Health Inspections

Ottawa County’s Environmental Health Inspection service provides evaluations of well and septic systems when required for child or foster care licensing, adoption home studies, or other child welfare purposes.

Our inspection report verifies that your water supply and septic systems meet basic safety standards to protect children and families. These evaluations help ensure safe living environments while supporting families through the licensing and approval process.

Short-Term Rental Inspections

Ottawa County provides well and septic system inspections for short-term rental properties when required by local municipal ordinances. Our inspection report verifies that your property’s water supply and wastewater systems meet applicable standards, protecting guests and the health of the community.

These inspections support property owners in meeting their community’s requirements for operating short-term rentals. Contact us to schedule your inspection.
