Ottawa County is taking applications for the Spring 2018 academy. The sessions will be held on Thursday evenings: February 15, February 22, March 1, March 8, March 15, March 22, March 29, April 12, April 19, April 26, May 3 and May 10.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office began the Citizen Police Academy in 2009 to increase the awareness and understanding of law enforcement's role in the community. The 12-session program is now offered annually giving an inside look at law enforcement to 25 citizens. Topics include:

  • Sheriff's Office Road Patrol
  • Ottawa County Correctional Facility & Tour
  • Ottawa County Central Dispatch & Tour
  • Undercover Investigations & Narcotics
  • Marine Patrol & Dive Team duties
  • Sheriff's K9 Patrol duties/demo
  • Sheriff's E-Unit Duties & Demonstration
  • Criminal Scientific Support Unit & Crime Scene Investigation
  • Use of force Explanation & Demonstrations
  • Firearms, Range & Simulator
  • Sheriff's Office Special Operations
  • Criminal Justice Legal System
  • Accident & Fatal Accident Investigations
  • Community Policing

Potential candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • Live or work in Ottawa County
  • No Misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
  • No prior felony arrests
