Sheriff's Office

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office
Grand Haven Charter Township

Sgt. Ryan DeVries, Supervisor

Mission Statement

The mission of those serving the Township of Grand Haven as members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is to preserve public order, support the constitution of the State of Michigan, and enforce all laws and ordinances of our state, county, and township while protecting the lives, property and rights, of all people in a professional and courteous manner.

General Information

To help keep our community safe, the township contracts four COPS (community oriented police services) officers through the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Grand Haven Township has enhanced their policing efforts through the contracting of additional law enforcement services with the Sheriff’s Office. A product of a special partnership between Grand Haven Township, Grand Haven Area Public Schools and Ottawa County is the School Resource Deputy position at Grand Haven Public Schools, with significant involvement in the township during non-committed school hours. Grand Haven Township is also committed to traffic safety with the assignment of a full time traffic position.

All requests for law enforcement service should be made to Central Dispatch at (800) 249-0911 (non-emergency) or in the case of an emergency, call 911 directly.

Township Ordinances

Grand Haven Township along with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office recommends that residents familiarize themselves with the ordinances to be aware of the restrictions/rules of certain activities.

Any persons found to be in violation of township ordinances can be subject to a municipal civil infraction.

GHT changed many of its ordinance infractions from criminal misdemeanors to civil infractions. Civil infractions only require that the Township show guilt with a preponderance of evidence rather than beyond a reasonable doubt. Also, those found guilty of ordinance violations will not have a criminal record.

Medication/Drug Disposal

In conjunction with the Ottawa County Health Department, there is a pharmaceutical collection box located next to the payment window in the lobby of the Grand Haven Township Building located at 13300 168th Ave, Grand Haven, MI, 49417. This is for all residents to dispose of unwanted drugs/medications.

Sign up for Smart911 and create your own Safety Profile to give 9-1-1 valuable information about yourself, family members, your home, pets and even vehicles that will automatically display on the 9-1-1 call taker's screen when you make an emergency call. It's private and secure and you control what information is in your profile. These details can save valuable seconds or even minutes during an emergency.

Property Checks

Grand Haven Charter Township, through it’s COPS Officers, provides free vacation security checks to it’s citizens who will be away from their homes, businesses, or other facilities for a period of time. Deputies will periodically check the exterior of the premises. This service is offered to deter potential burglars and provides additional security while your premise is unoccupied.
